In early October the Clarence High School junior and senior concert and stage bands competed in the Citywide Clarence Eisteddfod.

The Clarence junior concert band did very well competing in two different sections but did not place in either of the sections.

The stage band impressed coming second in their division. Some of the students were very nervous with it being the first time they had performed in the Citywide Clarence Eisteddfod.

“It was very nerve-racking and I was so glad when it was over.” _{Said a grade 7 student}

The Clarence Senior concert band did very well, earning a merit in their section. The senior stage band also did a good job. They competed back to back in two heats, scoring a merit in their first heat and a second in the senior stage band section.

Clarence impressed with the number of solos in their acts. Andrew on the drums, Hannah on flute, Loren on trumpet, Ollie on guitar, Jacqui on sax and Carmelina on vocals all provided great highlights and the audience really enjoyed it.

Crazy Day

Mohawks, fairies and hippies were found at Clarence High yesterday. Clarence High welfare committee organised a crazy dress day to raise money for our sponsor child, Gunja. Gunja is 10 years old and lives with her parents in Bihah, India. Money raised by students at Clarence High helps pay for her education and feed and clothe her.

The day raised $400 dollars.  Well done Clarence High students!

Tournament of the minds group leaves Launceston with heads held high

On Sunday the 28^th of August Carmelina, Simone, Sophie, Reilly and Adam drove to Launceston to compete in the Tournament of the Minds. It was risky to compete with such a small team but Ms Ross convinced the team that they had the creativity, practise and persistence to be strong competitors.

First up they had their long term performance: this is the play the group had been working on for six weeks. The category was Applied Technology and the question was ‘A journey starts with a single stop’. Clarence came through pretty well with some great comments from the judges.

The spontaneous event is where the group is given a question, they have four minutes to discuss and come up with an answer and one minute to present it. Clarence did very well with good scores and with some fantastic comments from the judges.

It finally came time for the presentation of certificates. The Clarence team were extremely happy to receive honours in the Applied Technology category as well as one of the few Spirit of TOM Awards. Heading home, the group from Clarence really did find the trip worthwhile and can’t wait to compete again next year!

Clarence Girls Strike Again

On Friday the 26^th of August Lily, Emma, Bec, Christie, Rubie, Elizabeth and Carmelina competed in the Tasmanian Volleyball Tournament where schools from anywhere in Tasmania came to compete. There were teams all the way from Port Arthur and Launceston.

The teams were divided into two pools.  The winners of each pool then went on to compete in the Grand Final.  Through the entire competition the Clarence girls did what they could to impress, winning three games with fantastic scores.  They only  had one loss for the day against the state team from Launceston.

Once the points were tallied up Clarence came third on the ladder after Collegiate and Brooks. Though Clarence didn’t make the final, they are looking forward to the Grass Volleyball competition to be held at Ogilvie High school soon.

Bell Shakespeare

“Doubt thou the stars are fire, doubt that the sun doth move, doubt truth to be a liar;

But never doubt I love.”

Grade 10 students were inspired by lines like these, at the performances and workshops with the Bell Shakespeare Company in August.

The Bell Shakespeare Company is a group of actors who travel around the world performing Shakespeare. We were lucky enough to have performances of Hamlet and Macbeth; each performance was then followed by a workshop.  The company was asked to come to Clarence to help students’ understanding of their Shakespeare studies. Students said they enjoyed the role playing exercises, opinion sessions and performance activities, and it helped their understanding a lot.

Science and Engineering Challenge

On Thursday 7^th July, forty grade 9 and 10 students attended the yearly Science and Engineering Challenge at the Moonah Sports Centre. The eight teams were accompanied by Mrs Wilson and Mr Herrington.

The activities consisted of Escape from the Lost World, Gold Fever, Eco-Habitech and World Sailing Spectacular, ElectraCITY, Puff Puff Golf and The Dish.

The Escape from the Lost World team won their challenge. Joel, one of the team members, said, “We had to make a frame out of balsa wood and tie helium balloons to it to make it go forward.” The frame had to move around a course. The one that completed it the fastest won.

Another team that did well was the Gold Fever team. Their challenge was to build a strong but lightweight bridge that would then be tested with a number of weights. It was a very close call but in the end their bridge collapsed under the load of the second last weight. However, they did have fun destroying the bridge before we left.

One of the harder challenges was the Eco-Habitech. Teams had to construct a dwelling with limited resources that could withstand all weather conditions. While the team managed to pass most of the tests done on their habitat, they want to come back next year to do better.

All in all, everyone had a good time and learned a lot. It was a good experience, working in a team, creating a plan and using resources wisely to achieve the best results.

Shooting Goals to become CHAMPIONS!

For the second time in two years the grade nine team have drawn in the semi finals and had to play an extra ten minutes. Last year they lost by one point but this year they won by one point! 

Congratulations to all the netball teams who competed in this year’s roster as all of the teams have shot their way to the finals.
Update: The year 9 team lost by 7 goal to Ogilvie Smith in the grand final in a hard fought game. The player said, " Coach Alice has helped us to get this far."
