Do you think that fights are won by the biggest, strongest person? Many martial arts teach various ways of fighting and within the most popular arts, there are often many different styles such as the dozens of Karate styles or hundreds of Kung Fu systems.Within fighting there are several fighting “ranges” or distances. These include striking, trapping, grappling and ground fighting. At the beginning of a fight, the adversaries will normally instigate at the striking range, but they will occasionally start at grappling or trapping range.

Striking (divided into kicking and punching ranges) is the act of using a limb to hit an opponent.Trapping is between punching and grappling range. Grappling is where many fights are decided, either by striking, choking or a joint lock.

Muay Thai Body Kick
Common attacks in grappling include submissions, takedowns, sweeps, throws and other actions which could injure the opponent. Perhaps the most famous form of grappling is the Jiu Jitsu descendant arts, i.e. Judo, BJJ, Sambo, Shooto, Aikido, Bartitsu and Hapkido. Recognized by many as the greatest combination of fighting techniques is Jiu Jitsu based grappling system with some form of kickboxing.

Aikido Throw and Wristlock

Many prominent figures in mixed martial arts train in Muay Thai - a form of kickboxing and Thailand’s national sport - and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – a ground focused form of Judo which in turn is a modified version of the ancient art of Jiu Jitsu. The fierce combination of powerful strikes and leverage-based submission grappling create a fast, effective and dangerous MMA style.
